Job Description

In conjunction with the Social Work Director, oversees the development and implementation of consultation services, clinical protocols, practice standards, policy, education, training and overall program management for the Child Protection Program. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Clinical Services: 

  • Provide expert consultation and support to staff and trainees (adult and pediatric floors, inpatient and outpatient services and clinics), partner agencies and families, regarding the assessment and management of child protection services. 
  • Works collaboratively with care teams regarding the management of cases of child abuse and neglect. 
  • Assures case follow-up and coordination. 
  • Assures compliance with established standards of practice. 
  • Advises staff on medical record documentation 
  • Identifies and responds to systems problems/issues for quality improvement 

Teaching, Education and Training:

  • Identifies training needs and provides education for hospital staff, trainees and affiliated community providers, around issues of child maltreatment, child protection and the management of those cases, via the mediums of seminars, in-service trainings, rounds and presentations.  
  • Orients all new Social Work staff, and staff in other disciplines as requested, to hospital policy on child maltreatment and the CPP. 

Program Development:

  • Policy, protocol and documentation 
  • Develops, reviews and implements policy and clinical practice guidelines relevant to the protection of children and families receiving hospital services, and the management of child protection cases. 
  • Develops and implements a standardized child protection case protocol and pediatric trauma risk assessment protocol. 
  • Develops and implements a standardized system of documentation for child abuse cases. 
  • Creates and maintains a Child Protection Program website. 
  • Collects and collates data related to the Child Protection Program. 

Internal Collaboration and Community Liaison:

  • Develops and strengthens relationships with community agencies (DCF, Children’s Advocacy Center, law enforcement) and other city hospitals (MGH, BMC, BCH, UMass). 
  • Chairs internal, multidisciplinary hospital wide meetings to discuss current child protection issues, research and data. 
  • Participates in city wide collaboration meetings with DCF and social workers from other Boston area teaching hospitals. 
  • Serves on committees as needed. 

Organizational/Administrative Skills: 

  • Responsible for overall administration of the Child Protection Program including:  policy and protocol development, dissemination, and compliance; overview of program data; documentation of program activities and periodic program reports as requested. 
  • Reports to Social Work Director, Child Protection Program 
  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment 
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. 

Qualifications

AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: 

Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes: 

  • Knowledge of growth and development 
  • Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care 
  • Provide age specific communication 

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • In-depth knowledge of child maltreatment and its impact on individuals, families and communities. 
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in assessment, crisis intervention and advocacy, consultation and collaboration 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop/lead program in complex multidisciplinary environment 
  • In-depth knowledge of community resources including DCF, CAC’s, courts, DA/police, etc 
  • Excellent communication public speaking skills, including demonstrated ability as educator with diverse, multidisciplinary audiences  

EDUCATION: 

  • MSW 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • 5+ years of hospital experience 
  • 5+ years of Child Protection experience 
  • Leadership and supervisory experience 

LICENSES, ETC.: 

  • LICSW in MA 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Normal office work environment.
